GLOSSARY

READ TO LEARN

This glossary exists to support brands in understanding the terminology behind garment manufacturing. Production involves many technical processes, and clear communication is essential to bringing ideas to life successfully. By breaking down industry terms into simple, approachable definitions, we aim to create a more collaborative and transparent experience for our clients. When knowledge is shared and expectations are clear, product development becomes more intentional, efficient, and impactful.

A

Approved Sample (TOP – Top of Production)

The final sample that is approved by the client before bulk production begins. This sample becomes the standard reference for quality, construction, and fit.

Artwork

Design graphics, prints, embroidery files, or branding elements used during production.

B

Bill of Materials (BOM)

A detailed list of all materials used to create a garment, including fabrics, trims, labels, packaging, and accessories.

Bulk Production

The large-scale manufacturing phase where garments are produced after samples are approved.

C

Colorway

Different color versions of the same garment style.

Cut & Sew

A manufacturing method where garments are created by cutting fabric and sewing it together from scratch, rather than customizing pre-made blanks.

D

Development Sample

An early prototype sample used to test design concepts, materials, and construction methods

F

Fabric Weight (GSM)

Measured in grams per square meter, GSM indicates how heavy or lightweight a fabric is.

Fit Sample

A sample created specifically to test garment sizing and fit on a body or fit model

G

Grading

The process of adjusting a garment pattern to create multiple sizes while maintaining proportion and fit.

L

Lead Time

The total time required to complete production, from order confirmation to final delivery.

Line Sheet

A document that outlines garment styles, colorways, sizing, and pricing for production or sales reference.

M

Marker

A layout of pattern pieces arranged efficiently on fabric to minimize waste during cutting.

Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)

The smallest number of units required for a manufacturer to begin production.

P

Pattern

A template used to cut fabric pieces that will be sewn together to form a garment.

Pre-Production Sample (PP Sample)

A sample produced before bulk manufacturing to confirm materials, measurements, colors, and construction details.

Q

Quality Control (QC)

Inspection processes used to ensure garments meet required standards before shipment.

S

Sample

A prototype garment created to test design, construction, and fit before bulk production.

Seam Allowance

The extra fabric added beyond a pattern edge to allow for sewing seams.

Specification Sheet (Tech Pack)

A detailed document that includes garment measurements, materials, construction instructions, trims, artwork placement, and production notes.

Strike-Off

A small fabric or print test used to confirm colors and design accuracy before full production.

T

Trims

All additional components used to finish a garment, including zippers, buttons, labels, drawstrings, and tags.

W

Wash Treatment

Processes applied to garments after production to create texture, softness, fading, or special finishes.

Closing Statement

This glossary is designed to help clients better understand garment manufacturing terminology and production processes. Clear communication ensures smoother development, accurate expectations, and stronger final products.
